To Kill A Monster Brings Y2K Rock Nostalgia With Single “The Past”

Raise a toast to a modern day pop punk band, To Kill A Monster has released their electric new single “The Past.” Based in Ohio, the group continues to defy the norms of their genre by blending punk, rock, and alternative. To Kill A Monster has had an extensive 16 year long career, being formed in 2005, the band has already played alongside acts like twenty one pilots and Asking Alexandria. After a brief hiatus, they are back and better than ever, with a revamped lineup and sound, they are ready to continue to rock the world.

“The Past” is a mix of everything a fan of 2000s punk rock would love, weaved in with some modern influences. Original singer of the group, Joey Lawson, has a real power to it, comparable to the emotional grit of Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas. Right out the gate the energy is through the roof in the best way. The drums strike and the electric guitars fly under Lawson’s vocals. They balance all the instruments in a way that gives them all an opportunity to shine. “The Past” has a goal of connecting punk fans new and old, and they achieve this with their lyrics singing, ““Cheers, cheers, here’s to all those years, to all we had through the good and bad… Here’s a toast to you, my friends, and everyone we lost since then.”

When asked to describe the song in his own words, Lawson shared, “‘The Past’ is all about just taking it back to being dumb and carefree with your friends. Celebrate the memories we made together and appreciate what we had no matter how short it was lived. A toast to all the friends new and old.”

Alongside the release of their single, the band has put out a music video on March 8th, it is a must-watch – showcasing the group’s humor and energy that makes them stand out against other rising bands. The video is very well done, and it is worth watching all the way to the end for their end-credits joke.

Overall, the group pays homage to other bands that they have played with or been inspired by, all while continuing to find ways to set themselves apart. Whether it is anthemic pop tracks or tongue and cheek videos, the band has continued to explore their sound and style and it has only gotten better since their 2005 debut.
