Interview: Kristin Carter Discusses New Album “Full Bloom”

With timeless vocals and a country pop edge, Canadian singer Kristin Carter has released her new 12 song project Full Bloom, available everywhere now. Carter was a breakout star reaching national recognition as a semi-finalist in SiriusXM’s Top Of The Country contest. She took that momentum and released her 2019 single “Karma,” which broke the top 20 on the Canadian country charts and garnered over one million streams. Taking that country influence and inspiration from crossover legends like Shania Twain and Taylor Swift, Carter has released this record with a strong pop influence, confidently crossing any boundaries that may have been set.

I had the pleasure to talk with Carter about her new project, her songwriting, and more

How has your 2024 been? Any highlights so far?

Putting out this album! We’ve been working on it for so long, it feels so amazing to finally have “Full Bloom” out in the world. In addition to that, I got engaged at the end of 2023 so that kicked off 2024 to an amazing start. 2024 is so far, so good!

Who or what inspired you to start songwriting and performing?

I grew up singing primarily in choirs. That’s really where I learned to sing. I had the privilege of learning from some amazing peers and conductors, and I credit them with inspiring me to create. If anyone out there wants to learn how to sing, a choir is an amazing place for that. I really treasure being part of that community.

You chose “I’m Still Here” as the lead single from your new album “Full Bloom”. What about this song made you want it to introduce the project?

Initially I wasn’t considering this song for the lead single, but after sending the album out to some trusted friends, they picked out that song as their favourite. It is one of my favourites on the album, but it’s a bit unconventional in its production style so I was worried that it might not resonate in the same way as a song with a more traditional production style would. I’m so happy that it ended up being the lead. We made a really beautiful and poignant music video to accompany it that I’m so proud of.

So your album, “Full Bloom”, is available everywhere now. Can you expand on the overall theme and inspiration behind it?

This album is a sonic journey through the diverse highs and lows of life. It walks through the curiosity, exploration, and growth that happens in the early years of adulthood. I see the songs on the album like flowers of all different shades, layers, and expressions. The variation in themes is very purposeful, because a garden of only one type of flower wouldn’t be a garden at all. This is my garden – in full bloom.

You worked with Marcus Ramsay on this album. Can you talk about what the production process was like and if the final product matched your initial vision for the project?

Marcus and I have collaborated together for many years – it was such a joy to make this album with him. We recorded this record in lots of different spaces and in many different ways, sometimes we were at a studio and sometimes I recorded out of my bedroom. It was a real labour of love. I think the album inevitably surprised us in many ways when it was finally done, we discovered sounds as we went along and explored lots of different ideas which led to music that we had never planned for but really loved.

What was the hardest song for you to write?

“Kintsugi”. I wanted to take great care with the topic of that song because of how important it is, and so I had several re-writes and versions of the lyrics to ensure I felt satisfied with it.

What are one or two songs you hope people listen to and why?

“I’m the One” and “The Waltz”. Both songs have lots of layers of production and lyrics. I find I hear new things each time I listen to them, so I would encourage everyone to listen to them 2 or 3 times to get the full experience. I love when people write to me and tell me about the little things they pick up on and notice.

If you could open for any artist right now, who would it be and why?

Sarah McLachlan – she is an inspiration for me because she’s such an emotive singer. I would love the opportunity to tour and learn from her.

What are some of your goals – musically or otherwise – for 2024?

A personal goal is to be kinder to myself when I make mistakes. I think it’s a good reminder to not be too hard on yourself and enjoy the process more. Musically, I’m starting work on a holiday project. I’ve wanted to make one for a very long time so I’m really looking forward to getting started on that!
