Kacey Musgraves Strips Down Sound With Single “Deeper Well”

Kacey Musgraves just released her lead single, Deeper Well, for her upcoming studio album of the same name. The album is set to release on March 15, 2024. A true definition of soul searching, it feels like Musgraves has taken on a softer sound since her more pop leaning project Star Crossed – which was released in 2021.

The song is introspective, Musgraves takes a moment to evaluate her friends and habits. She is kind with herself and others – having no regrets or bad feelings she just simply knows she needs to look out for herself more.

Layering the vocals and the strumming of guitars give a very folksy/singer-songwriter sound. It has a overall peaceful and whimsical feeling. Her most recent features with Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan seemed to be a way for Musgraves to put down roots in this genre and test out the waters. The album cover also works with the direction as it is paired with Musgraves out in a field holding a flower. The lyrics really shine throughout the song.

“No regrets baby I just think that maybe its natural when things lose their shine / so other things can glow,” she sings, “I’ve gotten older now I know / how to take care of myself / I found a deeper well.”

It feels like you are catching up with a friend who has gone through something transformative – and found an inner peace of sorts. This overall feels reminiscent to Musgraves debut album, Same Trailer, Different Park, solely for the softness and storytelling that takes center stage on this single.

This lead single is a strong introduction to Musgraves project, it is certainly an exciting direction and works beautifully with her voice. I am very excited to hear her full project this March and share my opinions on it. Overall, regardless of if you were a fan of Musgraves before, if you have enjoyed her recent collaborations – you’ll enjoy this single!
