Interview: Rauly Talks Acoustic Project and Rise To Success

Harnessing his unique vocals and indie pop influence, artist Rauly has released Rauly Unplugged, Vol. 2. The project takes some of Rauly’s popular releases and strips them back to showcase the lyricism and melodies underneath. It proves that Rauly excels in both his sounds and his stories. The singer has an interesting story when it came to finding the spotlight and close connections he now has.

I had the pleasure to talk with Rauly about his career, his new album, and what’s next for him.

How has your 2024 been so far?

It’s been a really great start to the year so far! I’ve been making a lot of new music, I actually just released a new acoustic album, Rauly Unplugged Vol. 2 on March 1st! I’ve performed a bunch this year so far in the Los Angeles area, which has been fun meeting new fans. Also, my song “This Is Love” has been getting a lot of love on TikTok and it’s been really cool to see people making videos and connecting to the song!

You were discovered while studying Finance in college, can you share more about your journey with music?

Music has been a part of my life since junior high, playing in a band during high school, and continuing to perform original pieces around my college campus. The turning point came when I sent some of my work to Charlie Heat, a platinum producer, and caught his attention. That recognition fueled my confidence and dedication to my music. Despite graduating with a finance degree, I chose to dive fully into my music career post-graduation, a decision that’s shaped who I am as an artist today!

You’ve got your new album, Rauly Unplugged, Volume 2 out now. Could you talk about the inspiration for releasing a stripped version of your songs?

The root of my musical journey has always been me and my guitar. Growing up, I’ve had a deep appreciation for acoustic versions of songs, and that love has significantly shaped my career path for releasing stripped versions of my music.

What was the hardest song to make acoustic? The easiest?

I don’t think there was a “hard” song to create because all of my music starts with the guitar, which makes the process easy for me. Having Busco, my collaborator, who’s incredibly skilled with the guitar due to his industry experience, also contributes to the ease of creating music together.

Who did you work with when producing this album? Any stories from the recording process?

Busco and I collaborate on all of my music! During the album production, Busco got a last-minute invite to the official SZA Grammys after-party, which was incredibly exciting for us! We had to pause our album work to prepare for the event, including deciding on what to wear.

What song or two might you be most excited for people to hear and why? How about songs you’re most excited to play live?

My favorites are “It’s Not Fair,” because I think a lot of people can relate to it and “Rainy Night” because the acoustic version sounds so different from the original version. I’m most excited to play live “Now” and “Sunlight” because the lyrics hit the crowd in a special way and the melodies are definitely catchy.

If you could open and tour for any present-day artist, who would it be and why?

My dream would be to open and tour with Ed Sheeran, because he has always been my inspiration for songwriting. When I first heard his song “The A Team,” I immediately connected with the lyrics and wanted to write my own original music.

What are some of your goals – whether musically or otherwise – for 2024?

Some of my goals are to go on tour as an opener and perform around the country in different venues to new crowds. Also, I have a ton of new music to release, so I’m hoping to connect with new fans and listeners that feel a connection to my songs.
