Interview: Kerri Watt Excites With Single “Predictable”

Jumping back into the country music world after taking time away as a new mother, singer-songwriter Kerri Watt has released her new single “Predictable.” “Predictable” is a track that exudes energy and passion, showing Watt is here to stay in Country Music. Her career has been anything but predictable though, Watt became an official Nashville Song Suffragette, with the likes of Kelsea Ballerini and Lainey Wilson, as well as played some large festival stages like C2C. When Watt was not touring the Scottish artist was even writing music for the big screen.

I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Watt about her new single, motherhood, and more!

How has your year been so far? Any highlights?

It’s been a good start to the year! All focus has been on recording all my upcoming singles so it’s been nice to be back in creative studio mode and experimenting with new sounds. The highlight just happened this past weekend when I played 3 shows at Country 2 Country Festival in London! It was really fun to play some of these new songs live and see so many people singing along to songs from my last album.

What originally inspired you to become an artist/begin songwriting?

Before I became an artist, I was a musical theatre performer. I was on tour for a year with a show and found myself being drawn to the band pit and intrigued by what the musicians were doing beneath the stage to make everything sound so great up above. One of the musicians had a spare guitar lying around and I used to go down there and just try figure out chords every chance I got. By the end of the tour I was pretty confident at getting through a few songs and the writing just came naturally. I’d play chords and a melody would come into my head. Or I’d see a phrase in a book and go and sing it along to the guitar. Once that show ended, I gave up my career in theatre and decided to go for it as an artist. I moved back in with my parents and spent all day every day practicing and writing. In the evenings I’d head into Glasgow and go to the open mics. It all kind of snow balled from there.

How has being a mother impacted your perspective as an artist and songwriter?

I guess I see the world differently now. My priorities have changed and I definitely don’t have the time I used to to be creative. But being a mum has reminded me to tap into my inner child. It’s easy to get all in your head and serious when it comes to writing but my little one has kind of just reminded me to have fun with it! I also want to write songs now that he can dance along to!

You’ve got your new single, Predictable” out now. Could you expand on the themes that inspired this song?

I had this line in my head for a few weeks ‘You be predictable you, I’ll be predictable too’. Back in my early 20s I used to love the unpredictability of my life – touring the world, new people every day, different hotel room every night and I thought I wanted to live that life forever – the idea of ‘settling down’ was terrifying to me. But then I met my now husband, got married and lockdown in 2020 forced me into this routine… and I embraced it! I now love the predictability of knowing who I’m coming home to each night, being in the same place for weeks rather than hours and having a solid foundation for my life. That’s the basis for the single. I took the whole idea into a writing session with Jenn Bostic & Jeff Cohen and voila!

How does this single differ from your last project “Neptune’s Daughter?”

The sound is evolving as I’m evolving as an artist. This track is a lot more driving than my last single ‘Band of Gold’ from the album. It really just tells the story of where I’m at in life right now.

Who did you work with when producing this single? Any stories from the recording process?

My brother Fraser Watt is a Nashville based music producer and I knew he was the right person to work on this new set of songs with me. He’s right in the thick of the country scene but works in all genres so he brought a really great overall vision for the sound we could create. I wanted to work with some specific musicians on this track but some were in Nashville, some in LA and me in Scotland! We couldn’t all get together at the start of the year so every part was recorded remotely and then pulled together by Fraser to form this epic sound!

What message are you hoping listeners take away from “Predictable?”

I guess the message is don’t be afraid of enjoying where you’re at in life. What I used to think was ‘boring’ is now something I love and you can be open to change!

What artists have you been listening to lately? Any recommendations?

I’m loving Spencer Sutherland, Lawrence and Lainey Wilson. All good for different moods and I can definitely recommend Laineys ‘Bell Bottom Country’ as a killer full album to listen to.

What does success as a musician and songwriter mean to you?

My definition of success is always changing! I’ve achieved a lot of things I’d hoped to but I still have a list as long as my arm of things I’d like to do. So I’ve learnt to appreciate the small wins. From the stage, that means watching an audience just have a brilliant time along to my music. On singles, it’s seeing the song pop up on playlists and watching it reach a bigger audience. And personally, the biggest success is that I can keep on doing what I love doing.

What are some of your goals – whether musically or otherwise – for 2024?

For 2024 I have 3 more singles on the horizon, im planning some headline shows and I’m renovating my house. So a busy year!
