Let’s Go Girls! Women dominate 66th Grammy Awards
Music’s biggest night occurred last night at the 66th Grammy Awards and was dominated by women. There were some historic wins, surprising snubs, and more!
ALBUM OF THE YEAR: MIDNIGHTS BY TAYLOR SWIFT
It feels like no surprise that, 2023 TIME’s Person of The Year also took home the Album of The Year for the same year. What makes it historic is Swift, who announced her 11th Studio Album, The Tortured Poets Department, became the first artist in history to ever win the coveted award FOUR times! She previously received the award for Fearless, 1989, and Folklore.
As a die-hard Taylor fan, I am happy for her and this win, though I would not have been disappointed if Boygenius’s The Record had taken the award Grammy home.
SONG OF THE YEAR: WHAT WAS I MADE FOR? [FROM THE MOTION PICTURE “BARBIE”] BY BILLIE EILISH
While the summer was full of Taylor Swift, it was also the summer of Barbie. This song beautifully captures the deep feeling in Barbie. Once you get past all the pink and perceived perfection, the movie and this song go hand and hand with girlhood. This is one year where I think the Grammy’s really chose the song that had the strongest songwriting and had a real message. It was personally the song I was rooting for to take home the award. This track also received the award for “Best Song Written For Visual Media” during the pre-show.
RECORD OF THE YEAR: FLOWERS BY MILEY CYRUS.
I was surprised this song came up on top. With a stacked line up of Boygenius, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Olivia Rodrigo, it was anyone’s game. Overall, I appreciate that Cyrus created this music from a place of real emotion and inspiration. There is no denying that this song is everywhere and supports the idea of making yourself happy instead of waiting around for someone else. It is a great song; I think it was just overplayed on the radio.
BEST NEW ARTIST: VICTORIA MONET
The big four going to all women is INCREDIBLE. Monet’s story is extremely heartfelt. She has been in the music industry for years, being a long-term co-writer for Ariana Grande’s work.
“This award has been a fifteen-year pursuit,” Monet says in her acceptance speech. She goes on to say she feels she has been able to bloom tonight, with her years of hard work finally gaining recognition.
QUICK TAKES: (opinions – very happy for all winners and nominees!)
It was disappointing that “Rolling Up The Welcome Mat” by Kelsea Ballerini was not able to take the Grammy for “Best Country Album.” However, it has personally transformed the way Ballerini perceives making an album, so I look forward to her upcoming releases.
Paramore became the first female fronted band to win “Best Rock Album!” While they did not attend the awards show, they did share a post on their Instagram of them with a cake that said “Winner;” they were also prepared with a cake that said “Loser” alongside it. Paramore was able to find the humor in the situation and I am happy they finally got recognition.
Women dominated the Grammys last night and it was very refreshing to see. I am excited to take a listen to some of these winners and nominees!
Were you surprised by any of the winners? Did you think any of the artists got snubbed? Would you like to see a full-length review on any of the artists I mentioned or didn’t mention?
