Interview: Chloey Rose Shares Stories From Single “Hot To Cold”

A chilling new single, “Hot To Cold” by pop artist Chloey Rose is available to listen to everywhere now. The BBC supported singer has already picked up traction with Wonderland Magazine deeming Rose a “true talent.” Her range is rich and has a depth to it that allows the listener to feel every word. “Hot To Cold” is an epic ballad that pulls the listener into this mysteriously beautiful world that Rose has built. I had the opportunity to talk with Rose and ask her about her new single, her process, and the “Hot To Cold” music video.

How has your year been so far – any notable highlights?

It’s been amazing to kick start the year with my brand new single ‘Hot To Cold’ which has definitely been the highlight so far! I’ve been excited to share a part of myself through this song as it’s based on a personal experience of mine.

So can you talk about who or what got you into songwriting?

Since a young age I’ve always felt drawn to music and the different emotions you can experience when listening to it. I really felt driven to write about music that could heal others by uplifting them or reminding them not to give up no matter the challenges they face. I was majorly influenced by the songs of Kate Bush and how her storytelling as a songwriter made her stand out amongst so many artists especially because her music felt so theatrical and unusual.

You’ve got your new single, “Hot To Cold,” out now. What’s the inspiration and influence behind the song?

I was inspired to delve into a past experience and bring to the forefront the raw emotions experienced during a painful breakup. Through my songwriting I intend for all music listeners to relate to their own story’s of heartbreak and the confusion of shifting emotions you can feel but mainly as a reminder that we are not alone and at some point this has or will become someone else’s story.

Who did you work with when producing this single? Any stories from the recording process?

The recording process was incredible! I remember initially traveling down to Cheshire to record the track with live musicians and remember how there was a real buzz in the studio. The song was produced by the very talented Sheffield producer Aron Bicskey.

You have a video for this single, can you talk about the creative process that went into it?

Filming the video was so cool!! It was filmed in Manchester in a beautiful chapel, the room inside the chapel was shaped like a ‘theatre in the round’ stage with a beautiful black grande piano right in the middle. I worked with the very talented team (Ben & Kerrie) at Everyman Studio’s who filmed and edited the video! The black and white colour scheme we chose for the video best mirrored the lyrics ‘hot to cold’ as we felt it best reflected the changing dynamics of a relationship.

What do you find to be the most challenging part of your music-making process, and what would you say is the most rewarding?

The most challenging part is the songwriting part which I find exciting however I find each song is made differently whether that is beginning first with chords and then adding a melody where words come later or vice versa. Sometimes songs feel like they are almost written, I find it such a magical process when you feel you’ve written something which you believe in. Some songs can take an evening to write and some a few days. The most rewarding part is being able to share your art and having listeners and supporters appreciate it and love it as much as you do! That is the biggest reward of all!!

What advice would you give to your younger self or young songwriters aspiring for a career in the music industry?

I would say don’t ever hold your music back just put everything out there and up there. Make yourself visible, perform at festivals, keep writing music and find new ways to connect with supporters. You must remain persistent don’t give up, if this is your dream and you believe you have what it takes keep going keep at it. Sometimes you will have days when you wished you’d given up, sometimes you will wonder why you still do it but the little wins, the passion and drive to do something you are passionate about is what really matters.

What are some of your goals – whether musically or otherwise – for 2024?

One of my goals would be to have my music played on a drama or TV series. I really feel my music would suit the background of a love or crime drama.
